日本人なのに日本に馴染めない。
かといって、アメリカ人でもない。
「私は何者なんだろう」と
ちょっと面倒くさい青春時代。
そんな私が大人になって行き着いたのは、
好きなものを全部ひっくるめて、服を作ることでした。
布が好き。古いものが好き。
日本もアメリカも好き。
着物だから着物っぽく。
浴衣だから夏だけ。
そんな決まりにとらわれず、
古い布を、今着たい服に。
型にはまらないって、
やっぱり心地いい。
I grew up going back and forth between Japan and the US.
Japanese, but never quite fitting in Japan.
Not quite American either.
I spent my younger years wondering,
“Who am I, anyway?”
Eventually, I found my way to making clothes—
bringing together everything I love.
I love fabric. I love old things.
I love both Japan and America.
Kimono fabric doesn’t have to look like a kimono.
Yukata doesn’t have to be just for summer.
I don’t like being boxed in by those rules.
So I turn old fabrics into clothes I actually want to wear today.
There’s something freeing about not fitting into a mold.
Fabric, just like life, should have room to be whatever you want it to be.
